Engineering means to design, maintain, build and improve machines, structures, devices and processes by application of science and technology. It is the application of technical knowledge in practical society to serve human beings by decreasing their effort to do some work.

Engineering is only the medium through which our society became developed. Its History is very old,it existed since ancient times as humans start to make simple things such as pulley, wheels, lever etc.All these innovation represents basic engineering principles to develop new useful components.

The word Engineering derived from a word ‘Engineer’ which means a person who operates a machine or engine. Word ‘Engine’ itself have older origin derived from a Latin wordingenium’ which means  “innate quality, especially mental power, hence a clever invention.”

The first engineer (electrical) considered to be Williams Gilbert  as he first termed “electricity” in 1600. Similarly Thomas Slavery considered to be first mechanical engineer as he built steam engine in 1698.His innovation generate a revolution in the engineering world. But Engineering as a profession had accepted in 18th century because of its requirements in applications of mathematics and science .Then it had divided into several branches and specifications as mechanical, electrical, civil etc.

Engineering mainly divided into four branches according to its specification and applications in different  field of science and technology. Such as Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Chemical Engineering.

  • Mechanical Engineering: It deals with the designing of physical and mechanical systems.
  • Electrical Engineering: It deals with the designing and study of various electrical systems and its applications.
  • Civil Engineering: It deals with designing of public infrastructure.
  • Chemical Engineering: It deals with the study of application of chemistry, physics, biology in a commercial process.

Apart from these four branches, there are other branches of engineering also. But these three are called as core branches of engineering or parent branches of all others branches of engineering, as all other branches are generated from these four branches. Now there are many new advanced branches of engineering science, but actually all branches are inter-related to each other and belongs to these four core branches of engineering.

Some of the other popular branches of engineering are,

  • Computer Science and Engineering
  • Applied Electronics
  • Electrical and Electronics Engineering
  • Plastic Engineering
  • Automobile Engineering
  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Thermal Engineering, etc.
